Summer Is Officially Over
This morning I had to actually wear a jacket while waiting with Jack for the school bus to arrive. Sometime over the weekend the morning temperature changed and there is a chill in the air now that wasn’t there before. Despite the official calendar date, Mother Nature has decided summer is officially done. The fact that it corresponded with the calendar is just coincidence, but a decided timely one. I’m still trying to get over that I needed a jacket. I didn’t need one yesterday, but today I did. Ah, Mother Earth, what a sense of humor you have.
I love this time of year. When I was younger Winter was always my favorite season, and I still love Winter. But Fall is my favorite season now. The colors, the smells, the gradual temperature change that says ‘Winter is coming” (sorry, had to be said), even the fall tv series beginning another season’s episodes…summer is over for another year.
Now begins the holiday countdowns. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s. I love it. I know Fall signals the beginning of the death of all the flowers and green things (except for evergreens, my favorites), and we tend to talk about aging that way, too, but for me, I’ve always felt more alive in the Fall and Winter. Soon we’ll see the leaves change here in Texas, and then the woodfires will begin to scent the air. The cardinals that live in the neighborhood will begin showing up again. And that reminds me, I need to get some birdseed and fill the feeders. Another thing about Autumn, lists of things that need to be done before Winter arrives.
Coats, hats, scarves…all the winter wear comes out of storage. Outside items come inside and plants get mulched and covered. The outside water spigots get insulation. And, with all luck, I will get the part I need for my washing machine within the month. Yep, Fall is here.
I hope your First Day of Autumn is a good one!
