Stuck On Repeat

How many of you are old enough to remember turntables? Remember when you’d get a scratch or a single small hair or something and then the needle would catch on it and repeat the same phrase over and over until you moved the arm? That’s what today’s NaPoWriMo prompt reminded me of. We had to write a terzanelle, which is a cross between a villanelle and terza rima. It consists of five stanzas with three lines each and an end quatrain (4 lines). Each stanza is chained together through end rhymes and repeating lines. See if you can find the pattern.

Naïve

By Jessica Scott

In fractions, I am yours,

Days when sin ignites a spark-

love always did run a wild course.

Tell me if I left a mark.

How could I even believe?

Days when sin ignites a spark-

You never give, I never receive,

I thought we bled the same light.

How could I even believe?

I thought we were alright;

I breathed you in, and you were mine.

I thought we bled the same light-

where are those stars I thought divine?

In your eyes, I have no reflection-

I breathed you in, and you were mine.

In pieces now, I’m fragmented in dissection,

In fractions, I am yours,

In your eyes, I have no reflection-

love always did run a wild course.

Jesi Scott is an aspiring writer of novels, a poet, and blogger. She has guest-blogged over at The Well-Tempered Bards, and has a post featured at For Love Of…. Jesi has two poems published in Memories of Mist, a literary anthology, and one published story in a newsletter. She is currently working on releasing her first poetry collection as well as writing her first novel. When not writing, Jesi can be found getting lost in bookstores, singing and dancing around the house, experiencing culture with friends, and generally having fun with her four sons when they aren’t driving her weeping into her closet, which she calls her Padded Cell. She loves to rescue stray bookmarks, as well as books, and has opened her heart to any and all stories needing a home. Archery is her current favorite thing ever but you might want to stand back a little as she still has a tendency to drop the bow occasionally.
